New Year, Clean Computer: 6 resolutions to help consumers start the new year right
MONTREAL, January 3, 2011- It's time for some New Year's resolutions! Why not take this opportunity to clean up your computer, catch up on security updates and complete backups? The New Year will probably bring new security threats – get ready for them by creating stronger passwords and putting up your defences against hackers.
ProtectionPower.ca, which offers identity theft protection resources and services, including proactive identity monitoring, has published a list of tips to help costumers start the new year right – at least as far as their computers are concerned.
"Given the huge toll identity theft can take, in terms of stress, lost time and money, it is vital for consumers to take basic, simple steps to protect themselves," explains Sylvain Patry, senior vice-president of ProtectionPower.ca and an expert in protecting against identity theft.
6 computer resolutions for 2011:
1. Create and maintain strong passwords. Start the New Year with fresh passwords. Do not use dictionary level words or names. A strong password uses a combination of numbers, capital and lowercase letters to secure your account. Change your passwords periodically.
2. Keep viruses out. Buy and install anti-virus software and make sure it automatically updates regularly – old anti-virus protection is as bad as none at all! Consider installing separate anti-spam, anti-malware and anti-spyware software.
3. Never hit “install later” when your operating system wants to download security updates. By updating your computer with the latest security updates you will stay on top of new potential threats that develop every day.
4. Protect your wireless (and defeat drive-by hackers). Ensure your home network is secure. Make sure your wireless connection is protected by a password that is only known to you. Keep your firewall active.
5. Ignore all pop-ups, unknown attachments, mysterious links and friend requests from people you don't know.
6. Do not lose any files in 2011. If you're not in the habit of doing regular backups, consider a program that will do them automatically for you.
