In good times or bad, many are always on the lookout for a new job. The popularity of online job search sites makes it all too easy for scam artists to take advantage of those pining for a better salary or working conditions.

In other words: it's job seeker beware out there!

While legitimate job sites are useful job hunting tools, it is important to be alert to the most prevalent job scams.

False “employers” may use job sites to collect resumes, which can be filled with enough personal information for identity theft. Other times, scammers may actually “hire” individuals and request bank account information for payment – and their own benefit.

Watch for these red flags! Be suspicious of any job ad that includes:

  • A request for bank account numbers
  • A request for your Social Insurance Number
  • A request for a scan of your driver's licence or other identification
  • Poor spelling or grammar
  • A contact email address that doesn't include the company name (ie, a Yahoo or Hotmail account)

No matter what job you apply for, remember:

  • Do not write your SIN or birth date on your resume – this is not required information
  • Never give your personal bank or PayPal account number to your employer
  • Do not forward or “wire” money to an employer
  • Do some research into the company and position
