As of July 29, 2010, Facebook had over 15 million users from Canada. That's half the population! Twitter, LinkedIn and other social networking sites are gaining steadily in popularity as well, with Canadian users in the millions.

With those kind of numbers, it's no wonder identity thieves and fraudsters are using the social media to commit their crimes.

Consider just a few of the most common social media scams/frauds:

  • Imposters: the account of someone you know is hijacked. Then the imposter sends you a message asking for money or help.
  • Requests for information: you should never have to give personal information to “unlock” a feature or application
  • Phishing scams: These often try to take you to a fake log in page or ask you to reveal passwords or other information
  • Infected attachments or applications that include malware
  • Theft of personal information

You can use social networking sites safely. Here are a few tips:

  • Don't release or post more personal information than necessary
  • Stay in control. Set your privacy settings as high as possible
  • Verify any request for assistance
  • Don't post vacation plans online
  • Don't download and attachments or applications unless you can verify the source
  • Never follow links in emails, even to log in to Facebook or twitter. Go to the site directly and log in there
  • Do not accept friend requests from people you don't know
