Where ID Monitoring Looks
ID monitoring services scour the Internet in search of your personal identification, cards and banking information. SpotMyID, Canada's only consumer ID monitoring service, is on the lookout day and night for any place your details may turn up.
SpotMyID identity monitoring is part of your Protection Power membership.
All SpotMyID users receive weekly updates, but if your identifying documents are spotted during a SpotMyID Internet scan, you will receive an “On the Spot” email alert that same day.
The goal is to let you know your information is at risk as soon as possible so you can take action!
Where does SpotMyID look?
SpotMyID scans literally millions of webpages every day, from social networking sites to questionable marketplaces, forums and chat rooms.
SpotMyID pays particular attention to the dark side of the 'net, which may include:
- Websites with discussions about buying and selling card information; also websites providing links to the sites where card information can be bought or sold
- FTP (file transfer protocol) sites with listings of card numbers. These may link to servers where huge stashes of identification information is stored
- IRC/chat rooms where fraudsters, identity thieves and other criminals share card information or provide links to sites where cards can be found
- Usenet postings that include card numbers or links to sites with card information. These can also include electronic bulletin boards and forums
- Online identity marketplaces – these are very much like any other marketplace on the web, except personal data is the commodity being bought and sold. Shockingly, credit card or bank account numbers, including passwords, can go for just pennies each
As the Internet evolves and grows daily, so does the watchful gaze of SpotMyID. The advanced intelligence employed by SpotMyID allows it to constantly extend its reach, discovering more than 100,000 new sites, 80 million blogs, 90,000 message boards, thousands of IRC/chat channels, billions of spam emails and more. This technology is already in use by many of the top financial institutions and corporations in North America – and now it is available to Canadian consumers.
SpotMyID's security
Just as SpotMyID knows where to look to find your identification and cards, it also knows how to protect you.
As a SpotMyID user, you will have to provide SpotMyID with full details of all the pieces of identification and cards (up to 10) you would like monitored. You can count on SpotMyID to take care of your data:
- Your “default card” is the credit card you use to activate your Protection Power account and for identification purposes. This is the only piece of information Protection Power will actually have access to, and it will be tightly protected by leading security measures and up-to-date encryption.
- All of your other pieces of identification and cards are secured away from Protection Power and SpotMyID's main servers. A complex encryption algorithm is used to convert each piece of your data – say, your bank account number – into an irreversibly encrypted piece of coded text. Once your information is encrypted in this manner, it no longer exists in its original form on the SpotMyID or Protection Power systems.
You can never know what is happening in the dark corners of the world wide web – that's why it's great to have a service like SpotMyID watching out for you. Sign up for a Protection Power membership today and start watching the web!
